I love Greek food.  It always makes me think of summer. This is the taste of a souvlaki  in a burger with the added bonus of a feta filling to increase the Greek influence.

Entirely up to you what to serve with the burgers but I think they would be great with some tzatziki, flavoured flatbread, and a Greek salad.

I have used minced pork in the recipe but substitute minced chicken, minced lamb or even minced turkey if you want. Beef is too strong for this recipe and, to my mind, is not a particularly Greek flavour.

Souvlaki burgers

Ingredients

  • 500g minced pork
  • 150g fresh breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1.5 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves of crushed garlic
  • Zest and juice of a small lemon
  • 1.5 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried mint (or fresh mint finely chopped if you have it)
  • 1.5 tsp dried coriander
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 125 g feta cheese

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients (except the feta) together thoroughly in a bowl.
  2. Cover and leave in the fridge for a couple of hours to allow the flavours to develop.
  3. When it is time to cook, cut the feta into 5 cubes and shape the burgers around the feta cubes.
  4. Ideally, cook the burgers on a BBQ or a griddle brushed with olive oil for that Greek summer feeling.
